How to Store Vegetable Seeds in the Refrigerator

Planting vegetables, especially when dealing with smaller gardens, usually results in a number of leftover seeds. Rather than dispose of them, you can keep the seeds viable for use for up to 10 years by storing them in a refrigerator. Preparing the seeds for storage takes about an hour. You can then store them with confidence, ready for the next planting cycle, even if that cycle happens to be years away.

Instructions

    • 1

Spread the seeds onto a baking sheet in a single layer.

    • 2

Preheat an oven to about 100 degrees Fahrenheit. Leave the over door open and place a thermometer inside to ensure you achieve the necessary temperature.

    • 3

Place the baking sheet into the oven and heat the seeds for six hours to dry them out, keeping the oven door open throughout the drying process.

    • 4

Put on a pair of oven mitts and remove the sheet from the oven. Wait about 10 minutes for the seeds to cool to room temperature. Place the seeds into a moisture-proof container, sealing the container tightly. Place the container into a refrigerator with a temperature below 40 degrees Fahrenheit for storage.
