How to Transfer Germinated Seeds With a Paper Towel

When it comes time to plant, many people like to begin their gardens from seeds. Properly planting the seeds and having them germinate is a critical part of the gardening process, and requires viable seeds. You can use a paper towel to germinate the seeds indoors before planting. This allows you to pre-start the seeds and to test the seed's viability.

Take a paper towel and cut it into two 4-by-4-inch squares. Moisten the squares with water. Place the paper towel on the counter and then spread our seeds out on the paper towel, placing each seed a half-inch apart.

Lay the other paper towel, also moistened, on top of the other towel with the seeds. Place the two paper towels and put them inside a plastic sandwich bag. Do not close the opening and place it in a warm spot. Keep the seeds from 65 to 75 degrees F.

Check the time needed for the seeds to germinate, which will vary depending on variety. Some require as little as two days, others up to a week. Check periodically, since it is important to see when the tiny radicle (tip of the germinating seed) makes an appearance. You do not want the root to grow into the paper towel. When checking the seeds, moisten the towels with a couple of squirts from a water bottle, if they feel dry.

Pick up the seed. When transferring the seed, it should be loose from the paper towel. Take a spoon or another flat object and roll the seed onto the surface. Place the seed in the soil.

Plant the seed at the proper depth for the variety. If the soil is dry, water to aid the seed's germination.
