DIY: Seed Germinators

Seed starters help make it easier for home gardeners to get a jump on the growing season by starting their plants indoors before the last frost. This can slightly extend the harvest by ripening foods a few weeks before it would be possible if the seeds were planted outdoors at the proper time. Use seed-starter discs and trays to make the process easier.

Instructions

    • 1

Open the seed-starter tray and separate the components. These include the tray, planting discs, planting-disc holders and the clear plastic lid.

    • 2

Place the planting-disc holders into the bottom of the tray so that the discs, when inserted, will be facing upward.

    • 3

Place the seed-starting discs into the tray in their individual spots. You will notice a slight indentation in the centers of the discs. This is the part of the disc that faces upward.

    • 4

Pour approximately 1 quart of water into the tray. This will cause the seed-planting discs and the holders to float. As the planting discs absorb moisture, they will expand.

    • 5

Place 1 to 4 seeds in each expanded planting disc. Push the seed down into the center of the disc using your finger. When the seed is pressed deeply enough, gently press the disc to cover the seed completely.

    • 6

Place the clear plastic top onto the seed-germinating tray. Put the tray near a window where it will get sun for at least 8 hours per day. When the seedlings have sprouted, begin venting the seed tray by propping the cover open until finally you have removed the cover altogether.
