How to Use Seed Blankets to Plant a Garden

Seed blankets are rolls made of two layers of wood mulch. The material is compressed to look like sheets of thick paper. The manufacturer presses flower seeds, a chemically inactive distribution medium, fertilizer and polymer to retain moisture between the two layers. At home, arrange the seed blankets on a prepared bed and activate the components with water. Germination occurs within three weeks.

Instructions

    • 1

Loosen the soil with a shovel. Rake the surface to smooth it out for installing the seed blanket.

    • 2

Unwrap and lay the seed roll on one edge of the tilled bed. Unroll it until it covers the area you want planted. If the roll is bigger than the length of the garden, cut it with a pair of scissors.

Drench the seed blanket and the soil under it in water at planting. Lift the mat. If it falls apart, you have applied enough water. If it remains in one piece, continue to irrigate it. Maintain the blanket and ground moist for the next three weeks. After germination, start watering the seedlings once a day.
