How to Start Seeds Indoors With Liquid Seaweed

Whether liquid seaweed increases seed germination rate is a matter of contention. According to a study performed at North Carolina State University, seeds soaked in liquid seaweed prior to planting did not germinate any faster than those not receiving the treatment. While according to multiple studies cited in a 2009 article in the "American-Eurasian Journal of Agronomy," seaweed extracts are "known" to improve both seed germination and plant growth, as it helps soil retain water and improves the ability of plants to take in nutrition. While there may be debate on its effectiveness using liquid seaweed didn't harm seeds, so it may be a fun project to conduct your own study.

Instructions

    • 1

Pour seed-starting mix into a planting container. This type of planting medium is sterile and helps avoid damping off, a fungal disease of seedlings. Water the mix until it is saturated and set the container aside to drain completely.

    • 2

Combine 1/4 tsp. of liquid seaweed in 1 qt. of warm water in a container.

    • 3

Place the seeds in the solution and allow them to soak for 30 minutes.

    • 4

Remove the seeds from the liquid seaweed solution and plant them, at the depth recommended on the seed packet.

    • 5

Combine 1 1/2 tbsp. of liquid seaweed and 1 gallon of water. Pour the solution over the planting medium immediately after planting. Pour the solution slowly to avoid disturbing the seeds.
