How to Propagate Seeds in Eggshells

Gardening and home-improvement stores are packed with products to help gardeners grow seeds and plants. However, many of these items are not necessary, since household items perform just as well. One example is that most garden seeds can be propagated in cracked eggshells. This is a good, eco-friendly way to reuse shells that you would otherwise discard and save some money getting your garden off to good start.

Instructions

    • 1

Crack open each egg by holding it sideways over a bowl and tapping the shell firmly on the rim of the bowl. Stick both thumbs inside the hole and pull gently to separate the shell into two pieces. Place the egg white and yolk into the bowl and use for cooking or discard.

    • 2

Rinse each egg shell out thoroughly under running water and then set each half back into the egg carton to hold them upright. You can use the top of the egg carton to hold shells as well as the bottom.

    • 3

Fill each shell one-half to three-quarters full of a seed-starting mix or sterile potting soil.

    • 4

Place one seed into the top of each shell and cover it with the amount of soil indicated on the seed package, typically 1/4 inch .

    • 5

Pour 1 tbsp. of water into each egg shell to moisten the soil and set the egg carton in a window sill that receives bright sunlight exposure.

    • 6

Water the shells as needed to keep them moist until the seeds germinate and the plants grow to 3 inches tall.

    • 7

Plant each seedling outdoors according to the seed package directions for sun exposure. Crack the egg with your hands as you insert it into the ground and leave the bits of shell in the soil to supply nutrients to the seedling.
