What Is Rootblast Made of?

Rootblast is a commercially available product used in the growing of plants, flowers, trees and vegetables. There are a number of products available in the Rootblast family of products aimed at specific plant growth, for example there are specialized Grassblast and Tomatoblast products.
  1. Composition

    • The composition of Rootblast is a 2-1-2 mixture, according to Rootblast International Inc. The major ingredients are nitrogen (2 percent of the mixture), phospate (1 percent) and soluble potash (2 percent). The remainder of the product is manufactured from a mixture of minerals and major and minor micronutrients. The minerals used in Rootblast include calcium, magnesium and iron, along with small amounts of other minerals.

    History

    • Rootblast was created by Patrick Murray, a researcher at the Canadian government's Agricultural Research Center. The creation of Rootblast began in 1962, with the fertilizer mixture perfected around 17 years later. The product is commercially available through mail order from the Rootblast website. The initial uses of Rootblast were in the farming and agricultural industries, with the research intended to help develop a larger, stronger root system for the plants fed with Rootblast.

    Use

    • Rootblast is a type of fertilizer initially aimed at developing a strong root system in the developing seed embryo and thin, hair-like roots growing in the early development of a seed. Rootblast can be applied to plants directly around the plant or to the drip line of the planting; the product is also able to be used with potted and house plants. The fertilizer is recommended for use in conjunction with other fertilizers, as the large root system created by Rootblast can use the available nutrients of a soil in a short space of time. In order to avoid damage to a plant, fertilizers should only be applied two weeks following the application of Rootblast. During the application of Rootblast the product can be mixed with soils and peat, but should not be mixed with other fertilizers.

    Environment

    • Rootblast is an environmentally-friendly product created from natural products, without the addition of man-made nutrients and additives. By using natural materials and products in the manufacture of Rootblast, the product is safe for use with pets and other animals and with humans. The application of Rootblast is recommended once per growing season of spring, summer and autumn to increase the rate at which plants grow. Along with the increase in plant and root growth, Rootblast can reduce problems with shock induced by transplanting. The product is also aimed at increasing the ability of a plant to endure extreme weather conditions such as drought.
