Will Watermelon Seeds Spit on the Ground Grow?

Watermelon seeds need special care to germinate. The chances of you spitting out a watermelon seed on the ground and having just the right conditions for the seed to germinate and start growing are rare. However, if you do have the right growing conditions, the seed could germinate and grow a watermelon. The seed must come from a seed watermelon and not a seedless watermelon.
  1. Planting and Temperatures

    • Seeds need to be 1 inch under the soil, but the soil temperatures must be at least 62 degrees Fahrenheit. The night temperatures cannot be lower than 65 degrees Fahrenheit or the seeds will not germinate. Daytime temperatures during the growing season should be between 70 and 80 degrees Fahrenheit. The best soil to plant watermelon seeds in is a sandy loam soil with good drainage.

    Weeds and Watering

    • Watermelon growing sites cannot have any weeds. The roots grow deep in the ground. The plants don't need regular watering, but the dry conditions also help weeds grow very well. In a garden or field, the area is kept weed free by cultivating the soil around the plants regularity.

    Pollination

    • Watermelon plants need pollination to fruit. There are female and male flowers on the plant. The female flowers produce the fruit and the male flowers provide the pollen. Flowers will open within two hours after sunrise. This is the critical time for pollination. If there aren't any bees around the area where you spit out the seed for it to germinate, you won't have any fruit, but you will have a watermelon vine if all other cultural needs are met.

    Fertilizer

    • The soil in which watermelons grow must be rich in nutrients. The ideal fertilizer is one part nitrogen, two parts phosphorous and three parts potassium. Liming isn't important as long as the soil pH is between 60 to 6.8 parts per million.
