How to Make Bean Sprouts With a Mesh Jar Top

Adding flavor and nutrients to hot and cold dishes, sprouts are the succulent young shoots of newly germinated seeds. A common item often found in salad bars, many people who enjoy eating bean sprouts don't realize how easily the tender veggies can be grown at home. Available at most health food stores and many supermarkets, beans can be sprouted in a mesh top jar in a few days.

Instructions

    • 1

Place fresh or naturally dried beans in a gallon jar, adding just enough beans to completely cover the bottom of the container. Cover the beans with water.

    • 2

Cover the jar with mesh netting and secure the netting to the neck of the jar with a rubber band. Allow the beans to soak overnight.

    • 3

Turn the jar over and drain all the water from the jar, through the netting.

    • 4

Place the jar, right side up, in a sunny window. The beans will begin to sprout within 24 hours. Sprouts may be consumed any time after they have germinated; two to three days is optimal for most varieties.
