How to Germinate Lemon Slice Hibiscus Seed

A cultivar of sunset hibiscus (Abelmoschus manihot), Lemon Slice features creamy yellow petals and edible leaves, seedpods and seeds. All types of hibiscus plants grow readily from seed. Start your seeds in the late winter, about one month before frost danger passes for your area. Lemon Slice hibiscus flowers grow in U.S. Department of Agriculture hardiness zones 7a to 10a and tolerate cold temperatures down to 23 degrees Fahrenheit.

Instructions

    • 1

Nick the surface of the seed with a knife to encourage easier germination.

    • 2

Soak your Lemon Slice hibiscus seeds in a bowl of cold water overnight, or wet a paper towel and wrap seeds in the moist paper towel for up to one week. Presprouting the seeds with water encourages germination.

    • 3

Fill 4-inch pots with seed starting mixture, using one pot per hibiscus seed.

    • 4

Place one hibiscus seed in each pot and cover with seed starting mix. Water the plants to moisten the seed starting mix.

    • 5

Continue to water the seed starting mix when it becomes dry, adding enough water to moisten it. Keep the plants in a warm, humid environment such as a greenhouse, or indoors in your bathroom. The seeds germinate in two weeks.
