How to Grow Muhly Grass From Seeds

For most of the year, muhly grows as a dense, clumping ornamental grass. Gardeners prize it for its thick, lush growth and easy-growing attitude. Muhly is a hardy ornamental plant. It is drought tolerant and will grow in any soil with access to full sun or partial shade with very little help from you. And late in the season it will explode in delicate feathered pink plumes making it the focus of the garden. Muhly grass easily is grown by seed. Plant it in late winter or early spring. As soon as temperatures reach 70 degrees Fahrenheit, your muhly seed will begin to germinate.

Instructions

    • 1

Remove any existing plant material from the muhly grass bed. Dig the plants roots and all or spray them with a broad-spectrum systemic herbicide. If you use herbicide, consult the manufacturer's label for any warnings on the amount of time you must wait before replanting.

    • 2

Loosen the top 6 inches of the soil with a shovel or garden trowel. Keep digging through the soil until it is an even consistency. Break up any clumps and remove any rocks, roots or other debris that you uncover along the way.

    • 3

Smooth the soil flat with a rake.

    • 4

Place each seed on the surface of the soil and press it down to ensure good soil contact. Keep each seed at least 2 feet away from its neighbor. Consider creating groupings or drifts to create big pops of color.

    • 5

Cover each seed with 1/4 inch of soil and pat the soil down with your hands.

    • 6

Water the seed bed to moisten the top inch of the soil. Continue providing the bed and seedlings with 1 inch of water per week for the best growth. However, muhly is quite drought tolerant. Once the seedlings sprout and get growing, they can survive on the annual rainfall in your area making them great for xeriscape gardens or areas where water conservation is an issue.
