Chickasaw Plum Seed Removal

The Chickasaw plum (Prunus angustifolia) also goes by the name of the sand plum or mountain cherry. These plums were cultivated first in 1984 and thrive in United States Department of Agriculture hardiness zones 6a to 9b. Like most wild plums, Chickasaw plums are smaller than the average plum one might find in a grocery store. Because of their small size, the seed or pit is a bit more difficult to remove. However, when using Chickasaw plums for culinary purposes, it is important to remove the seed. The seed of a Chickasaw plum also can be used to propagate a new tree.

Instructions

    • 1

Hold the Chickasaw plum in your nondominant hand and cut the flesh of the plum as close to the pit as possible using a sharp kitchen knife. Cut so that the blade is facing you as you cut to prevent slicing your finger and give you more control.

    • 2

Cut down the center of the plum until you locate the seed.

    • 3

Turn the plum as you cut, removing the flesh carefully from the pit. Cut along all sides of the seed until no more fruit remains attached to the plum and the seed is free.
