Tiki Hut Thatching

Tiki hut thatching provides the quintessential tropical look to the roof or walls of an authentic tiki hut. Consisting of dried palm leaves, the thatching serves not only for aesthetic purposes, but if crafted and installed properly, can serve as a water resistant roof. Many different varieties of palm leaves can be used. The best varieties of palms for making the thatching are those that have leaves similar to a queen, king, or kentia palm. These palms all have fronds with singular leaves that are long and finger-like coming off the main leaf stalk.

Instructions

    • 1

Cut the fresh palm fronds from the trees where they meet the trunk. Cut the leaf stalk on the end where it was attached to the tree, leaving about 1 foot of leafless stalk. Already dried palm fronds can also be used.

    • 2

Strip the individual palm leaves from one side of the leaf stalk using a pair of garden clippers or a sharp knife, leaving the other side of the leaf stalk full of leaves.

    • 3

Prepare all the palm fronds that you need in this manner, in one sitting. To achieve the best tiki hut thatching, the prepared palms leaves need to be attached to each other tightly, which requires a significant amount of leaves. The width of the thatching for a roof or wall section of a tiki hut may be comprised of 20 or more palm fronds, with the length of the thatching depending on the length of the palm frond.

    • 4

Attach two palm frond leaf stalks to each other by aligning the two stalks and pressing them together with all the individual leaves pointing in the same direction. In other words, if you lay one prepared frond on the ground, one side will have leaves and the other will not; then lay another frond directly on top with the leaves pointing in the same direction.

    • 5

Tie the two fronds to each other tightly with bailing wire. Make enough ties to secure the two fronds from falling apart as more fronds are added.

    • 6

Repeat Steps 4 and 5 until enough palm fronds are attached to create the desired width of tiki hut thatching.
