Create a materials list with measurements for the wood. A materials list for making a simple, 2 x 4-foot bench is included here, but your bench can be any length or width, just adjust the measurements as needed. Your local home improvement store will cut the treated wood to size for you at no additional charge. Pressure treated wood is best for outdoor use as it is protected against mold and insects.
Place the 4-foot long pieces of treated wood side by side, close together but not touching. Make sure the ends are even on both sides.
Pre-drill the 2 x 2's for screws, one hole every 3 inches. Place the 2-foot (2 x 2) wood braces across the planks, each one about 1 foot from the ends of the wood. Attach the braces to the planks with screws.
Place two of the 20-inch 4 x 6's side by side and lay one of the 1 foot long 2 x 2's in the center. Attach with screws. Make two more just like this one. Together they are the braces for your outdoor bench seat.
Place the bench seat face down and attach the braces with screws. Place one on each end and one in the middle. Flip it right side up.
Sand any rough spots with heavy grade sandpaper. Finish this simple outdoor bench with a coat of wood sealer to help protect it from the elements. Place it in your garden and enjoy.
