How to Build Outdoor Furniture Out of Trees

There are many expensive options for decorative outdoor furniture, from a couple of hundred dollars to thousands. Fortunately, you can build your own outdoor furniture out of trees with hardly any expense. Take some time to walk through the woods and collect the bulk of your materials. This not only gives you free materials but also cleans up walking paths and underbrush. In a few hours you will be sitting pretty on handmade, rustic furniture.

Instructions

    • 1

Gather as many fallen trees as possible. While the lengths may be different, you will need nothing shorter than three feet. Do not collect anything smaller than three inches in diameter. When finding larger rounds, choose pieces at least 12 to 16 inches in diameter. The rounds should be no shorter than 20 inches long.

Create stump chairs by cutting the rounds from larger trees into lengths 20 inches high. Set the stumps on their ends where you want them. Work the stumps into the ground to steady them by twisting back and forth while pressing down. Test the chair by sitting on it and leaning in different directions. If it is planted correctly the chair should not tip. Smooth the top surface with sandpaper, if desired, or leave with a rustic look.

Make a small table by preparing two rounds in the same manner as the stump chairs. Place them about a foot apart. Cut eight sections from the 3-inch trees into 3-foot lengths. Line the small trees up with one another. Interlace your rope over and under between the boards about three inches away from the ends to secure the table top. Set the top over the two rounds to create the table. Nail the top to the stumps if desired to make the table more permanent, or leave it in portable condition.

Build your bench by preparing three rounds similar to that of the chairs. Cut eight of the 3-inch trees into 4-foot long pieces. Line up the trees and weave the rope or twine through in the same way as making the table, keeping the rope running in about three inches from the edges. Align the three rounds in a row and place the bench seat over top of the rounds. Nail to the rounds to secure the seat.
