How to Refinish Wrought Iron

Wrought iron is a favorite metal for ornamental outdoor furniture. It is also used in buildings, indoor decoration and fences. If not taken care of properly, wrought iron can rust and wear, making a once beautiful piece of furniture an eyesore. Thankfully, refinishing wrought iron is simple. It just takes a few products and a bit of elbow grease. You can paint wrought iron to suit your tastes once you have refinished it.

Instructions

    • 1

Remove any rust that may have formed on your wrought iron with sandpaper. Use an up-and-down motion.

    • 2

Rinse off the wrought iron with your garden hose. Allow the object to dry completely.

    • 3

Spray the wrought iron with rust converter. If you aren't already wearing your gloves, put them on before working with the rust converter.

    • 4

Spread the rust converter with a paint brush to make sure it is even. Allow to dry.

    • 5

Apply primer to your wrought iron. Allow to dry. You can usually find metal primer alongside the regular paint primer at your local hardware store.

    • 6

Paint your wrought iron--and your object will look like new.
