How to Build a Primitive Bench

Benches have been used for hundreds of years as places to sit, places to work, and places to set items for later use. However, purchasing a bench for one of these uses is often more expensive than building one yourself. Or, it may be that the bench will be used for a purpose that will end up destroying the bench, thus reducing the cost-effectiveness of purchasing versus building yourself.

Things You'll Need

  • - Six pieces of lumber (measuring 2" x 4" x 6')
  • - Wood screws (No. 10, at least 3" long)
  • - Electric drill
  • - Drill bit (1/8")
  • - Screwdriver drill bit head (Phillips or Slotted, according to the type of wood screws used)
  • - Cross-cut wood saw
  • - Straight edge, such as a ruler
  • - Pencil
  • - Measuring Tape

Instructions

    • 1

Measure three feet from one end of one piece of lumber. Mark the lumber with a line at the three-foot lengthwise measurement using the pencil. Cut the piece of lumber at that measurement so that you have two pieces of lumber measuring 2" x 4" x 3'. Take a second piece of lumber and repeat this step.

    • 2

Take a piece of lumber measuring 2" x 4" x 6', and measure it, marking the lumber at the 1', 2', 3', 4', and 5' lengthwise measurements. Cut the lumber at these measurements.

    • 3

Take the three pieces of lumber that have not been cut, and drill two pilot holes through the narrow side of the wood at each end of each of the pieces of the lumber. These holes should be about 4 inches from the edge of the lumber. Take two pieces of lumber measuring 2" x 4" x 1', lay them flat, and space these 6 feet from each other. Lay the 6' pieces of lumber flat so that the edges cover the 1' pieces of lumber. Line up the 1' pieces of lumber so that the long edge lines up with the short edges of the 6' pieces of lumber.

    • 4

Carefully drill through the pilot holes of the 6' pieces of lumber to create pilot holes in the 1' pieces of lumber. Once the pilot holes have been made, attach the 6' pieces to the 1' pieces with the wood screws, thus creating the top of the bench.

    • 5

Taking the 3' pieces of lumber, drill two pilot holes through the narrow side of the wood at each end of each of the pieces of the lumber. These holes should be about 4 inches from the edge of the lumber. Flip the top of the bench upside down.

Align one of the 3' pieces of lumber with one of the edge pieces of the bench top, so that the narrow part of the 3' piece is perpendicular to one of the edge pieces of the 6' piece of wood it is placed upon. Carefully drill through the pilot holes into the 1' piece of the table top, and fasten the 3' piece to the 1' piece. Repeat this step three more times to create the legs of the bench.

    • 6

Take one of the remaining 1' pieces of lumber, and center it on the unattached end of one of the bench legs. Align the top edge of the 1' piece of lumber with the top of the unattached leg, and drill a hole through both pieces of wood. Attach the 1' piece of lumber to the leg using a wood screw. Repeat this process three times to create stabilizers for the bench legs.
