Instructions

  1. Building a Martin House

    • 1

Purchase your gourd after it has been dried. The drying process can take three months if you purchase the gourd off the vine.

    • 2

Mix a bleach solution using warm water and a half cup of bleach. Dip the gourd in this solution and, using steel wool, scrub the gourd thoroughly to disinfect. Rinse well and allow to dry thoroughly.

    • 3

Drill a 1 1/2-inch hole on the front of the gourd to serve as the entrance into the house. Using a small drill bit, drill two to five small drainage holes on the bottom of the gourd. Once complete, drill the same number of holes around the top of the gourd for ventilation. Drill one last hole at the top of the gourd, which will be used to hang the bird house.

    • 4

Paint the house using the oil-based enamel paint in the color of your choice. Allow to dry thoroughly. Apply two coats if necessary.

    • 5

Run a length of plastic-coated copper wire through the hole at the top of the gourd from which you intend to hang the house. Tie securely in a large loop. Choose a secure place and hang your now-completed martin house.
