How to Remove Paint From Metal Lawn Chairs

Removing old paint from your metal lawn chairs is the first step in preparing them for repainting. What you use to strip the paint depends on what type of metal the chairs are made of and the shape of the parts. Don't use a steel wire brush on an aluminum chair because it could badly scratch the metal. Larger brushes can't reach into nooks and crannies in the chair.

Instructions

    • 1

Clear your work area and lay down a tarp or groundcloth.

    • 2

Remove any non-metal parts such as cushions, seats and seat backs. Set them out of the way.

    • 3

Put on your goggles and gloves.

    • 4

      Shake the stripping compound.

    • 5

Open the container slowly with the lid pointing away from you then pour some into the paint tray.

    • 6

Brush the stripping gel onto the chair, covering all of the paint. Wait the time specified by the product you are using, typically 15 to 30 minutes.

    • 7

Test a small area to see if the paint is ready to come off. If not wait and try again in 15 minutes.

    • 8

Use the brushes and scrapers to remove the paint. The corner of the plastic scraper works well to get into corners.

    • 9

Clean the newly stripped surface with an after wash solution to remove any residue and prep the surface for new paint.
