Choose a location in your yard for the rock fireplace. The fire pit should be a minimum of 10 feet away from buildings, shrubs, trees and any other fire hazards.
Use measuring tape to decide on how large you want your fire's diameter pit to be. Spray paint a circle around that diameter as a guideline for digging out your fire pit.
Dig out all of the grass and soil inside the circle. Use a shovel to remove all soil, plants and rocks to a depth of 12 to 14 inches.
Pour 4 to 5 inches of gravel in the bottom of the fireplace and spread it evenly around.
Place 2 to 3 inches of sand on top of the gravel.
Line the walls of your fireplace with landscaping rocks. Use rocks of a uniform size and roughly rectangular shape. Press the bottom layer into the sand for a more stable fit.
Place rocks inside the walls and around the outer perimeter of your fire pit. If desired, add a layer of smaller rocks to the bottom of the fireplace; this will help it retain heat.
