How to Refinish Resin Patio Tables

Resin, or plastic, patio furniture doesn't usually need to be painted. The material is so sturdy and weather resistant that it requires little maintenance. You may, however, be tired of the color of your patio table or chairs. If so, using a spray paint for plastic can instantly transform your patio furniture and give your outdoor space a brand-new look overnight.

Things You'll Need

  • Ammonia-based cleaner
  • Paint thinner and steel wool (if table is new)
  • Rag
  • Garden hose
  • Sandpaper
  • Low-tack painter's tape
  • Drop cloth

Instructions

    • 1

Clean the resin patio furniture thoroughly with an ammonia-based cleaner. Coat new furniture with a layer of paint thinner and brush with steel wool to remove the shiny topcoat. Remove the paint thinner with a damp rag.

    • 2

Place the furniture in the yard or driveway and hose it off with the hose nozzle set to the highest possible pressure. Remove any dust, cobwebs and cleaning solution that is sitting on the surface of the furniture. Allow the furniture to dry.

    • 3

Sand the furniture using medium-grit sandpaper to create some texture on the furniture, allowing the paint to adhere to the surface and creating a more durable finish. Wipe off all sanding dust with damp rags.

    • 4

Tape off any areas that you don't wish to paint with low-tack painter's tape. Put the furniture on a drop cloth to protect the driveway or lawn from paint.

    • 5

Spray the furniture using a spray paint formulated for plastic. Spray the furniture using a steady back-and-forth motion, slightly overlapping with each pass of the spray can. Allow the paint to dry completely.

    • 6

Apply two to three coats of paint, allowing each coat to dry to the touch, usually one hour, before applying the next coat. Allow the paint to cure for seven days before using to avoid chipping the furniture's paint.
