Create some privacy if your outdoor living area is in plain view of passers-by. Your patio or porch will not be a comfortable place for reading books, dining or entertainment without a sense of seclusion. Add a screen, curtains or trellis with climbing vines to make your outdoor living area more intimate.
Look for the right furniture for your outdoor space. A small bistro set doesn't take much space, yet it is adequate for a moonlit outdoor dinner on the tiniest of patios. Find comfortable chairs and footrests. Add small tables next to the lounge chairs for resting refreshments. Design a space where you or your guests will want to stay and relax.
Create a mood with lighting. While a bright overhead porch light may be needed for cleaning, soft lamp light or candles are much nicer for outdoor evening entertainment. Make your own hanging candle holders from preserve jars for soft light that's easy on the wallet.
Think of each of the five senses: sight, hearing, smell, taste, touch as you decorate your outdoor room. Make your outdoor area visually pleasing. A rug, pretty furniture cushions, artwork and plants add beauty and comfort. When the flowers on the trellis are out of bloom, add scent with incense or perfumed candles. Hang wind chimes to fill the air with natural music.
