Measure the length of the replacement vinyl strap that you will need using the tape measure. Choose an unbroken strap next to the broken strap. Start underneath the piece of lawn furniture, in the position where one end is connected to the frame. Measure the entire length of the vinyl strap, including the portion that wraps around underneath the piece of furniture.
Hold the tape measure in place with one hand, bring the tape out, up and around the tube of the frame on one side, across the top, and down around the underside of the opposite side. Multiply this measurement by .85 and then add 1 inch to calculate the length of replacement strap you need.
Wash any dirt away from the piece of lawn furniture using the sponge and some soapy water in the bucket. Rinse with the hose and allow to dry completely.
Use the measuring tape to measure the length of vinyl strap replacement you need from the roll. Cut your piece with the shears.
Install the drill bit, then drill a hole in each end of the replacement vinyl piece. Your holes should be at least ½ inch from the cut edge.
Trim off the pointed corners at each end of the vinyl strap to keep them from sticking out when attached to the furniture piece.
Boil a pot of water large enough to hold all of the vinyl pieces you have cut. Place the vinyl into the boiling water and wait five minutes before removing. Use the tongs and gloves to avoid contact with the hot water.
Remove the straps using the tongs and dry with paper towels.
Insert a plastic fastener into each hole of the vinyl strap, pressing until the head of the fastener is flat against the vinyl. These fasteners are designed to fit snugly into the existing holes of the vinyl lawn furniture frame.
Press the fastener on one end into one of the holes in the underside of the furniture piece.
Bring the strap up and over the frame, in the same manner as when you were measuring. Brace the furniture piece with one hand and pull the vinyl strap with the other.
Hold the unattached end of the strap against the opposite side of the frame firmly. Use the other hand to press the fastener into the other hole. Adjust as needed; the strap will settle as it cools down.
