How to Paint Brick for the Garden

Brick structures add a beautiful, rustic look to any garden. Bricks are often used for walkways, raised beds and even for outside stoves. If you want to change the look of your bricks, the most simple option is to paint them. Colored bricks will give your yard a personal look unlike any other garden. Painting bricks is as easy as painting most other surfaces, but you must prepare the bricks beforehand for best results.

Instructions

    • 1

Wash the entire brick surface with a power washer. Set the pressure to 1500 psi and hold the nozzle at least 5 feet away from the surface as too much pressure can damage the bricks.

    • 2

Wait four days for the bricks to dry. Bricks are extremely porous so drying times can be long.

    • 3

Use the paint roller to apply a thin coat of primer over the brick. Be sure to use an exterior paint intended for masonry. Let the primer dry for 24 to 48 hours.

    • 4

Brush an exterior acrylic latex paint on the bricks with a paint roller. Allow the paint to dry for 24 hours and then apply a second coat.

    • 5

Touch up any missed spots with a standard paintbrush.
