How to Build an Outdoor Living Room

For people living in climates that enjoy pleasant weather for many months of the year, building an outdoor living room is a relatively inexpensive way to add another room to their house. Using existing furniture and adding some decorative additions, you can create a new living room right on your property. Instead of just having bare lawn in back of your house, you may create your most popular room.

Instructions

    • 1

Create the floor to your room by deciding what surface you want to have. An existing patio or deck is the perfect starting place. If you have an empty area, consider installing patio stones for a solid surface. If you want to keep the grass for a floor, make sure that it is in good condition and weed-free.

    • 2

Create the visual effect of walls. Place something around the perimeter of your room in order to stop the eye from roaming further. Place large potted plants around the edge of the patio. Plant hedges around the deck. Set up a canvas roof and hang mosquito netting. You want to create a visual stopping point at the edge of your room area so that the room size is defined.

    • 3

Install comfortable seating. The main purpose of a living room is so that people can be comfortable sitting and enjoying activities, whether conversation, crafts or entertainment. Use lawn furniture with thick cushions, wicker chairs and stools or bent-twig crafts for seating. Make the seats comfortable and colorful.

Add tables. You will need side tables to hold drinks and snacks, as well as a larger table in case of craft projects or meals. A side table to hold food to be served is also a nice addition. Make the tables match or coordinate with the seating furniture.

    • 5

Install lighting for various uses. Hang task lights over chairs in case someone wants to curl up and read. Install general area lighting or strings of lights to illuminate the entire area. Place smaller lights near the floor for safety, to help prevent stubbed toes in the dark.

    • 6

Add electronics for entertainment. This can range from a cart that rolls out and holds a small stereo and CDs to an elaborate waterproof video player system. At the very least, make sure that there is a possibility of music being played at all times.

    • 7

Install a means of holding a fire. There is a large variety of commercial outdoor fireplace and firepit systems. Choose one that fits in with your space and decorating style.

    • 8

Put in place a means of holding beverages and keeping them cold. You may want to install a small refrigerator if it is well-sheltered under a roof. You might just want to add a large galvanized tub to hold ice and cans, which can be dumped into the grass at the end of a party. Convenience is the key here, rather than cost.
