How to Repair the Webbing on Lounge Chairs

Patio furniture with polypropylene webbing will only last so long in the long, hot summer months. Wear and tear will eventually cause the chair webbing to become brittle, fray and eventually break. There is no need to throw the chair away because of a few worn-out strips. The webbing can easily be replaced. With a few minutes of time and replacement webbing, your lounge chair will be ready for another summer.

Instructions

    • 1

Turn the chair over and work from the back side. Locate and remove the strip of webbing that needs replacing. The webbing will be attached to the chair frame with either screws, plastics clips or grommets. Use a screwdriver and/or pliers to remove the attachments.

    • 2

Lay the old strip flat. Measure the old strip of webbing with a measuring tape to get the exact length for the new strip. Transfer the measurement to the new webbing. Allow extra length for a pointed double fold at the ends. Cut the webbing with scissors.

    • 3

Make a double fold at one end of the webbing to strengthen the strip at the point of attachment. Do this by double-folding the end on top of itself to make it pointed. Punch a hole in the middle of the triangular point with an awl.

    • 4

Work from the back side of the chair. Take the strip of webbing and curl it over the front of the chair frame and around to the underneath side of the chair. Align the punched hole with the hole in the chair frame and attach the strip with the attachment (screw, clip or grommet).

    • 5

Weave the new webbing through the existing strips across to the other side of the chair frame. Repeat the process in step 3 to make a double fold at the end of the webbing strip and punch a hole at the pointed end. Check for slack. If there is too much slack, cut a little off the end and reform the point. Wrap the strip around the frame and line up the hole with the hole in the chair frame. Attach with the appropriate hardware.
