Instructions

    • 1

Choose a design for your concrete bench. Use computer software or simply draw a three-dimensional model on paper. Select a sturdy particle board or plywood material to create a mold for the bench. You will only need four sides since a top and bottom will we where the concrete will set. Cut the board to a size specific to your design. Nail the four sides together.

    • 2

Pick a location to place the bench. Dig a flat of soil about 5 inches in depth and large enough to accommodate the size of your created box. Allow about 5 inches on each side of the box for a clearing. Remove any debris and dead roots from the area around the bench so the concrete won't be disturbed. Level the soil and compact it with a flathead shovel.

    • 3

Place the box mold over the hole. Use a level to ensure it's completely flat. Drive a wooden stake into the ground on each side of the box to help stabilize it after the concrete is poured. Cement is a very heavy material that will cause the box to shift. If the surface becomes unlevel, the bench may be crooked or have large dips in it.

Mix the concrete together with water and a shovel. The amount needed will depend on how large the box is. Fill the mold box to the top with concrete. Even the top out with a trowel for a smooth finish. This will also allow the concrete to set faster. Allow the concrete to dry, usually about 24 hours.

Remove the stakes and the mold from around the concrete. Be careful when removing the nails in the model, making sure not to bust the concrete structure. Wash the sides and the top to remove loose concrete or accumulated dirt. Consider using a stain liquid or paint to add a decorative touch to your new bench.
