• Glass balls have been associated with many popular superstitions through the ages, including protective magic and fortune-telling. The tradition of placing glass balls outside the home began in England, and spread to New England where glass yard ornaments are still a common sight today. It was believed that the glass would reflect curses and trap evil spirits.

Fishing Floats

• Commonly, a glass fisherman's float would serve as a witch ball. These floats were hollow spheres of glass which were used to hold fishing nets in place. Though fragile, glass represented the best available material at the time. Glass was not a cheap commodity in 18th century England, but glass floats might sometimes be found washed up on the beach.

Today

• Today, witch balls are produced specifically as yard ornaments. Both mass-produced and hand-blown, they are available in many colors and sizes. Some glass balls have decorative objects placed inside them. Special effects such as swirls of contrasting color or iridescent coatings on the glass make them an eye-catching addition to any garden.
