Ideas to Decorate a Garden Arbor With Garland

If you have a plain, simple arbor in your garden, then you may want to experiment with several decorating ideas to dress up your arbor. You can decorate your garden arbor for a special occasion--such as a wedding in your garden--or simply to pay homage to a particular holiday such as Thanksgiving. Use natural materials whenever possible, as silk or plastic flowers will not be able to withstand weather conditions overtime and will make your garden arbor appear unkempt and even inexpensive.
  1. Forest Arbor

    • Create the look of a forest on your garden arbor by covering it with branches, moss and greenery such as fern sprigs. Go on a walk through a nearby forest to gather your materials. You want to weave the branches through the trellis of your arbor or attach them to the tops and sides of the arbor with floral wire. Nestle moss and sprigs of forest greenery, such as ferns, glossy Magnolia leaves or other forest foliage, into the gaps. Finally, drape a garland of pine cones across the top of the arbor. You can make this garland by stringing pine cones together with long strips of floral wire. The combination of these elements creates a natural, peaceful look.

    Holiday Arbor

    • If you are holding an event in your garden during the holiday months, consider wrapping your arbor with a garland of evergreen branches and needles. You can purchase this garland from a local nursery or from a holiday tree farm. You can drape the evergreen garland over the top of the arbor, and let it hang down both sides. Secure the garland with a little floral wire. Dress up the arbor in even more of a holiday spirit by nestling red berry sprigs, holiday tree ornaments and even holiday lights through the trellis of the arbor. You have created instant charm for your backyard holiday party during the evening.

    Flower Chain

    • Make a "flower chain" that can be draped across your garden arbor. You can use any type of flower and a little floral wire to make your flower chain. However, some flowers--such as daisies--have ideal stalks for using only the flower themselves. To make a daisy chain for your arbor, use your thumb to split one daisy stalk about halfway down its length. Then thread another daisy stalk through that slit, and continue this process until you have a long chain of daisy garland. Mix this with evergreen garland, and secure to your arbor.
