How do I Clean a Mildew Stain on Unfinished Wood?

Unlike most other surfaces, the presence of mildew and mold on unfinished wood does not damage the surface of the wood. The mildew causes unsightly discolored areas, but of more concern is the effect the mildew spores can have on the health of those who are allergic to mold and mildew. Removing mildew from unfinished wood restores the wood and its appearance and helps maintain a healthy environment for your family to enjoy.

A scrub brush allows you to kill mildew spores hiding in the pores of the wood.

Combine 1 qt. of household bleach with 1 gallon of warm water in a bucket. Dip a soft-bristled scrub brush in the bleach solution and lightly scrub the solution into the unfinished wood where mildew is present. Continually dunk the scrub brush into the bleach solution and apply the solution to the entire wood surface affected by mildew.

Allow the bleach solution to remain on the unfinished wood surface for a couple minutes. The bleach kills the mildew spores and renews the appearance of the unfinished wood.

    • 3

Rinse the surface of the unfinished wood with a hose or bucket of water, making sure to remove all the bleach solution.

Sunlight is a natural mildew and mold killer.

Pat the wood surface dry with old towels and allow the wood to finish drying. If possible, place the wood in direct sunlight for faster drying and to kill any tiny remaining mildew spores.
