Measure the widest areas of all the plant pots you want to sit on the plant stand. Group smaller pots that can share a single pedestal and measured these together.
Sketch ideas for the plant stand that include horizontal pedestals large enough to support all the included plants. Draw support legs for the structure so it is at least 3 inches off the ground. Borrow design elements from stools, ladders and tables to create a stable structure.
Bring the sketches and measurements to the hardware store to purchase the wood. Ask for assistance from an employee to make sure that you will have sufficient materials to complete the plant stand. Many different designs can be made from a single sheet of plywood and a couple 2-by-4 planks.
Measure and mark the outline of the pieces on the wood before making the cuts. Sand down rough edges and corners to prevent splinters and give the wooden plant stand a professional look.
Assemble the platforms and support legs of the plant stand using long wood screws. Employ a bubble level to make sure each pedestal is even before screwing it into place.
Putty over the screw heads and paint or stain the assembled plant stand to protect the wood and extend the life of the piece. A plant stand can be a part of the display and not just a support system if it is well designed and professionally executed.
