Creative Uses for Plant Stands

Plant stands can be used for many purposes, especially in the garden. While they can be used to hold plants, they can be used for purposes such as holding food and beverages, as well as garden decorations. The possibilities are endless. Plant stands can be reused from inside the home, purchased or scavenged. Old, rickety stands can be refurbished before use.
  1. Placement

    • Plant stands placed in the garden hold a wide array of plants for your enjoyment. Placement of the stands is important for them to look as attractive as possible.

The stands, placed next to lounge chairs or in patio corners, add an interesting decorative element outdoor areas. A tall stand, holding a potted vining plant, looks nice in the garden, with medium-sized flowers planted around it. Two short plant stands placed in front and to the sides of a medium-sized stand is attractive with potted begonias or geraniums.

    Starting Plants

    • Tiered plant stands come in handy during the early spring season for starting seeds. Once the seeds are planted in their pots, place them onto the stand tiers. Drape thick, see-through plastic over the stand and the pots, and place rocks or pieces of wood on the plastic at ground level to trap heat. On warm days, the plastic can be removed, if desired, for a few hours. This plastic helps hold heat in during cold nights, so the seeds and seedlings are not damaged.

Many tiered plant stands have slotted shelves which allow for easy air flow. During the later autumn months, potted plants that are still producing can be placed below the shelves. The plastic is used in the same way as they were during the spring to allow for further ripening.

    Creative Uses

    • Tall plant stands often have three round shelves. Removed, these shelves can be replaced with plates. Placed on a picnic table, the stands hold food of different types, such as cupcakes or vegetable sticks. Set up next to a lounge chair, place a potted plant on the bottom shelf, a basket of items from nature on the middle one and a beverage and book on the top. These stands hold garden decorations, such as statuettes, as well.

Placing a wide bowl on the top shelf is another option. This bowl, filled with water or seed, attracts birds.
