Sandbox Cover Ideas

With every good sandbox must come a good sandbox cover. If your sandbox is not covered, rain and moisture could enter the sandbox and cause the sand inside to become clumped and unsuitable for play. In addition, an open sandbox can also be an invitation for animals, such as cats, to relieve themselves inside, which can potentially expose your child to parasites. Fortunately, you can easily make a sandbox cover with materials you may already own.
  1. Children's Swimming Pool

    • If you have an old plastic child's swimming pool you aren't using anymore, turn it into a sandbox cover, suggests the Recycling Revolution website. Simply turn the swimming pool upside down and place it over the sandbox. Use paint or permanent markers to decorate the pool. If you are concerned about the pool blowing off of the box, stack a few bricks or cement blocks on top of the pool. Placing the pool on top of the sandbox will prevent the sand from blowing out and will keep bugs and other unwanted guests from coming inside.

    Tarp

    • Although it may not be the most aesthetic option, a tarp is a suitable choice for a sandbox cover. Lay a tarp over the sandbox and place bricks or cement blocks in the center to keep it from blowing away. You should also place bricks or blocks along the edges of the tarp that rest on the ground. Doing so will prevent animals from sneaking under the tarp and entering the sandbox. Place the bricks or blocks close enough together to keep any unwanted animals from crawling or walking in between them and entering the sandbox. Consider using spray paint on the tarp to add decoration and color to the cover.

    Lattice or Plywood

    • A piece of lattice makes an excellent sandbox cover, advises the Bob Vila website. If you don't have lattice, use a piece of plywood instead. Both are capable of keeping the sandbox covered. Lattice and plywood are typically available at the hardware store. Simply measure your sandbox and choose a piece of plywood or lattice that is the same size, or cut the piece so that it will fit. Use paint or chalk to decorate the lattice or wood, if desired.
