How to Tile Patio Furniture

When the weather gets nice, you might daydream about entertaining in your backyard --- with new outdoor patio furniture. If brand-new furniture isn't in your budget, spruce up the furniture you already own. Adding tile accents or a mosaic tile pattern to your existing furniture is a quick, easy and inexpensive way to update a piece, as long as the furniture is in good condition and sturdy enough to support the weight of the tile.

Instructions

    • 1

Spread the cardboard on the ground. Turn the table or other piece of furniture onto the cardboard so that the side you'll tile is face-down on the board. Trace around the furniture with a pencil to create a template. Remove the furniture.

    • 2

Lay out your tile pieces on the template in any pattern you like. Mosaics can be random in pattern or arranged to create a mural. You can also choose larger tiles like slate or any ceramic tile.

    • 3

Arrange and rearrange the tiles until you are happy with the design. Turn any tiles that need to be trimmed over and use a marker to note where to cut. Cut each tile with a tile cutter and place it back on the template.

    • 4

Spread tile adhesive across the top of the furniture with a notched trowel.

    • 5

Remove the tiles from the template and place them onto the furniture, pressing them firmly into the adhesive. For square tiles in a set pattern, place a spacer between each tile. For mosaics, arrange the tiles without spacers. Let the adhesive dry.

    • 6

Spread grout over the tops of the tiles with a grout float. Spread the grout back and forth until it settles in and completely fills the space between the tiles. Use the side of the float to remove the excess grout from the face of the tiles. Let the grout set for 20 minutes.

Dip a sponge into clean water. Remove the remaining grout residue from the tops of the tiles with the sponge. Rinse the sponge often. Let the grout dry completely.
