Summer Outdoor String Light Ideas

In the summer, string lights can add a touch of brightness and style to your outdoor spaces. Whether you are decorating for a party, adding sparkle to your garden or preparing for a family meal, lights can be used for atmosphere. As you plan, choose the places that are available for hanging lights, and pay attention to the availability of power outlets near the space.
  1. Light Ceiling

    • If you are decorating a space which has a limited view of the sky, a light ceiling can create the impression of twinkling stars. About 12 feet from the ground, hang strings of lights from one side of the space to the other. Leave 1 to 2 feet of space between each string, and arrange them so that each successive string is parallel. You can also create a ceiling by stringing lights outward from a center flagpole. If you are decorating a walkway, string lights in a diagonal pattern across the walk to make a dramatic entrance.

    Object Illumination

    • For an unexpected touch of light, use string lights to wrap the frame of various objects. Choose items that add to the ambiance: an old wagon wheel for a rustic wedding or garden, an antique fan for a small space or a wire-frame word or letters. Wrap individual light strings tightly around the frame so the object itself appears to be glowing. Position the lighted object among a set of plants or flower pots to shed an additional glow on the leaves and blossoms, or use it as a centerpiece on a serving table.

    Tree Lights

    • Instead of wrapping strings of lights around tree branches, which tends to create a Christmas-like feeling, use strings of paper lantern lights. You can find the lights in colors and in sphere or box shapes. For an elegant look, hang strings of small, white paper lanterns so that they drape along the bottom edge of the branches. Colored paper lanterns are useful in setting a whimsical mood in a party space or for a luau-themed dinner party.

    Light Curtain

    • When you want to add light to a dark corner of an outdoor space or create an instant divider, use a light curtain. If you do not have a vertical tree branch, roof edge, clothesline or other structure to act as a top pole, make one using 2x4-inch pieces of wood nailed into a rectangular frame. Attach individual strings of lights to the top pole using a heavy-duty staple gun; hang strings about 2 inches apart.
