How to Attract Birds to Your Birdbath

A birdbath provides a much-needed source of drinking water and serves as a cleaning station for birds. Birdbaths come in both pedestal and hanging varieties. Once you have decided on the type you want to use, the next step is figuring out ways to attract birds to your new birdbath. The best way to do that is by creating a natural and safe environment that welcomes them to the area.

Instructions

    • 1
Trees allow birds a quick escape and shelter from predators.

Set up a pedestal birdbath in an open area that is at least 15 feet from low-lying shrubbery. Birds avoid areas where predators can hide, stalk and attack them.

Cats will instinctively hide under shrubbery and stalk birds in a birdbath.

Set up a feeding station in the area to attract hungry birds. The feeding area attracts birds to the drinking water in the birdbath. Make sure it is a short distance from the birdbath to prevent seeds and casings from falling into the clean water.

Install a dripping source, birdbath fountain or small water pump on the bath to attract birds. The natural water noise draws the birds to the birdbath. Hummingbirds bathe in flight under a dripping source, according Avian Web.com.

Place a birdbath bowl directly on the ground to attract mourning doves and quail. These birds normally bathe at ground level.

Install a birdbath water heater to remove ice from the bath during winter months to attract birds that are thirsty and in need of clean, warm bathing water.
