How to Repair a Rib on an Offset Umbrella

An offset umbrella is versatile in providing shade to an area. Standard umbrellas install in a hole in the center of an outdoor table but they do not move to block the sunlight. An offset umbrella sits in a moveable base and tilts sideways to provide shade to any side of the table. Closing an umbrella when it is not in use prevents strong winds from knocking it down and breaking the ribs.

Instructions

    • 1

Remove the offset umbrella cover. Pull the hook-and-loop tape open and pull the cover off each umbrellas tip. Depending on the make of umbrella, it may or may not have hook-and-loop tape underneath.

    • 2

Lay the umbrella frame on a flat surface with the underneath facing up. Grasp the upper and lower hub wire with a pair of pliers and untwist it. The upper and lower hubs are the round areas where the ribs attach. The hub wire is in a slot and twisted at the end to hold the ribs in place.

    • 3

Pull the upper and lower hub wire out of each rib until you reach the damaged rib. Thread the new rib on both the upper and lower hub wires. The wire fits in a hole in the upper and lower rib. Install the remaining ribs that were removed onto the hub wire.

Twist the end of the hub wire onto the beginning portion of the hub wire as tightly as possible. Push the hub wire into the slot at both locations with a small flat screwdriver.

Replace the cover on the frame and reattach hook-and-loop tapes if you have them on your model of offset umbrella.
