How to Landscape Around an Outdoor Fire Pit

Designing a landscape around an outdoor fire pit raises safety concerns. Nothing flammable, like flowers or long-leafed plants, should go near the fire pit. If you want natural elements in your fire pit landscape design but also want it to be a safe environment, design a landscape that does not have plants leaning directly against the fire pit. Accessorize the landscape design with elements that keep the space safe yet inviting.

Instructions

    • 1

Remove any weeds or roots in the soil surrounding the fire pit with a hand rake. If soil surrounds the fire pit, ensure it is fluffed and moist.

    • 2

Rake away any debris, small stones or leaves that lay on the ground near the fire pit. Sweep any cobblestones or concrete surfaces near the fire pit.

    • 3

Place landscaping ground cover around the fire pit.

    • 4

Place large cobblestones, regular stones and pebbles around the fire pit in a half-moon shape. Place the larger stones on the ground first, followed by smaller rocks and pebbles.

    • 5

Plant flowers or plants in flower pots of your choice. To make a dramatic statement around the fire pit, use large flower pots that draw attention and add personality in the garden.

    • 6

Place the flower pots on both sides of the fire pit, leaving the front of the pit open.
