Plans on How to Build a Plant Stand

Plant stands elevate plants off of the ground for a visually pleasing appearance and to allow for some clearance beneath the pot for drainage. Although plant stands can be purchased in a variety of styles, building your own allows you to customize its appearance to your taste and needs. You can build a basic 12-inch-square stand with pine boards and a few tools.

Instructions

    • 1

Clamp two pine boards together so that they make an L-shape when you look down on them. You want the boards joined along the length of the boards to form the legs for the stand. Use the corner clamps at the top and bottom of the boards to hold them securely.

    • 2

Drill four pilot holes, using the 1/4-inch drill bit, that go from the exterior of one board through the side of the other board. Insert 2-inch wood screws into each hole and drive them into place using a Phillips-head drill bit. Sink the screw heads just beneath the surface of the wood.

    • 3

Repeat Steps 2 and 3 for the remaining pine boards, making a total of four L-shaped legs.

    • 4

Measure 2 inches from the end of each pine board. Mark the spot on each board with an "X." Place two markings on each board, precisely 2 inches from each end. Center the markings on the board and separate them 1 to 2 inches. These are the locations for the screws to support the bases for the stand.

    • 5

Position a pine plank so it is level with one of the rows of markings on one of the legs. Hold the plank to the leg with a 24-inch bar clamp.

    • 6

Drill a pilot hole through the pine boards at the "X" and into the pine plank. Insert and drive the 2-inch wood screws through the boards and into the plank, with the screw heads just under the surface of the wood.

    • 7

Repeat Steps 5 and 6 for the other three legs, and for securing the legs to the second plank.

    • 8

Cover the screw holes with wood putty, if desired. Paint or stain the stand if desired.
