How to Build a Porch Storage Chest

A porch storage chest is used to store smaller items used frequently in the garden or backyard, such as gardening tools and supplies, patio furniture or pillows, swimming pool toys or equipment and seasonal barbeque tools. A storage chest is made commonly of wood and can be rather expensive to purchase due to the custom designs a chest often has. Design and custom make your own storage chest suitable for outdoor conditions by using basic plywood and hardware tools.

Instructions

    • 1

Measure the space where you want to place your porch storage chest. Storage chests can be smaller storage boxes or can be as large as a porch bench for seating. Measure the space and determine the length, height and depth of the chest using a measuring tape.

    • 2

Draw the pieces needed for the chest on the plywood, using the pencil and measuring tape. Draw two identical pieces for the front and back using the length and height measurements. Compose two rectangular pieces for the sides using the height and depth measurements. Lastly, create two pieces for the bottom and chest lid using the length and depth measurement. An additional inch should be added to the depth pieces.

    • 3

Cut out the 6 pieces for the outdoor storage chest using the jigsaw. Place the pieces together according to size. Place the side pieces together, and the lid and bottom piece together, for example. Sandpaper all edges and surfaces smooth.

    • 4

Place the side pieces across from one another, and the front and back pieces across from one another to create a rectangular wooden box frame. The side pieces should go in between the front and back pieces. Attach the pieces to each other to secure the frame, using the 1-inch long screws and the mechanical screwdriver. Check the evenness using the level. Use at least two screws per corner.

    • 5

Attach the bottom piece of the chest by placing it on top of the frame. Use the 1-inch long screws and the mechanical screwdriver to secure the bottom of the storage chest. Flip it right side up when done.

    • 6

Place the chest lid up to the chest, so the sides line up. Place the hinges so that one end is placed inside the chest and the other end is on the lid itself. The hinges should be placed evenly apart, at least 10 inches if possible. Use the 1/4-inch screws and screwdriver to secure the hinges to the chest.

Paint the chest the colors you desire. Add detailed or custom designs using smaller paintbrushes and darker colors than your chosen base color. Spray a thick layer of water repellent on the porch storage chest once the paint has dried, so the chest can repel water during rain storms.
