Supplies Needed to Build an Outdoor Fire Pit

Building an outdoor fire pit in your home landscape creates a casual gathering area for daytime and evening enjoyment. The construction is a simple process when the pit is made from preformed landscape blocks.
  1. Equipment

    • The construction of an outdoor fire pit requires the use of a spade, shovel and rubber mallet. A spade is a sharp-edged shovel that cuts through the lawn sod when you are digging the ring. Use the shovel to dig the soil out of the hole to create the pit. The rubber mallet helps you pound the bricks or stones into place without damaging their surface.

    Stones

    • Select 6-inch-tall landscape stones to construct the fire pit ring. You will need enough blocks to create three to four levels. Select matching cap blocks to finish the top edge of the fire pit. You can increase the visual appeal of the fire pit area by installing coordinating pavers or flagstone around the base.

    Filler

    • Secure the landscape blocks together with a masonry adhesive. The adhesive is available in a caulk tube for easy application. Spread a 5-inch layer of pea gravel in the bottom of the fire pit once installation in complete.
