How to Build a Wood Tomato Cage

You can build a wood tomato cage from inexpensive materials. Tomato cages help support the weight of growing tomato vines and the fruit they bear. Wooden tomato cages allow plants to grow larger and produce more tomatoes. A few tall garden stakes connected together can form a sturdy trellis for the plant to rise up into through the growing season. Improve your chances at a successful tomato harvest each year with homemade wood tomato cages.

Instructions

    • 1

Cut half of the garden stakes into 24-inch sections with a saw.

    • 2

Lay both sets of six foot long stakes parallel to one another and 22 inches apart with their top and bottom ends even. Flip the long stakes so the pointed ends are pointing in the same direction.

    • 3

Place a 24-inch section of stake two feet up from the sharp end on each set of long stakes. Drive a wood screw into each end of the 24-inch connector pieces where they overlap onto the long stakes.

    • 4

Apply a second 24-inch connector two feet away and parallel to the first. Drive a wood screw through the overlapping sections at both ends of the 24-inch connector. Duplicate the connection position on the second set of long stakes.

    • 5

Secure a third perpendicular 24-inch connector at the flat end of the long wood stakes. Duplicate the connection position on the second set of long stakes.

    • 6

Push the sharp ends of one of the set of joined stakes into the ground 11 inches from the stem of the tomato plant. Continue pushing until 10 to 12 inches of the pointed stake ends are underground.

    • 7

Press the other two connected long stakes into the ground on the opposite side of the tomato plant as the first and 11 inches from the stem. Push the stakes into the ground until the rungs are parallel to those of the stakes on the other side of the plant.

    • 8

Connect the two sets of long stakes with 24-inch planks. Drill the connecting stake sections in one inch below the existing rungs to avoid splitting the wood.
