How to Make a Planter in an Old Chair Bottom

Create a focal point in your yard, porch or garden by recycling an old chair into a planter. Scour garage sales, flea markets and even your neighbor's trash for just the right chair to fit your personal style. Consider the type of plants you like, and choose a chair to accommodate them. For example, chairs with tall backs give climbing plants a place to branch out, while short chairs can serve to accent bushy shrubs. By using materials and tools you already have around the house, crafting a planter from an old chair allows you to inexpensively personalize your garden.

Instructions

  1. Flower Pot

    • 1

Measure the pot and the chair seat. Be sure the seat is large enough to accommodate the pot you have chosen.

    • 2

Refinish the chair. Paint it using as many colors as you choose. Paint on patterns if you wish. Give it an antique look by wiping off some of the paint to let the wood show through. Allow the paint to dry. Choose a shabby chic style by leaving the chair as is even if the paint is peeling or the finish has worn off.

    • 3

Spray the chair with polyurethane to protect the finish. Let the polyurethane dry.

    • 4

Cut a hole out of the center of the seat. Use heavy-duty scissors or pruning shears if the seat is a pliable material like wicker. Cut a wooden seat out with a scroll saw.

    • 5

Fill the pot with commercial potting soil. Plant flowers, herbs or vegetables of your choice.

    • 6

Insert the pot into the opening you have cut out of the chair seat.

    Screen or Chicken Wire

    • 7

Refinish the chair as directed above.

    • 8

Cut a piece of screening or chicken wire in the shape of the seat and large enough to form a container for the plants and overlap the chair frame.

    • 9

      Remove the seat.

    • 10

Position the screen or chicken wire you have cut over the chair where the seat was. Center it. Push down on the screen or wire forming a bowl shaped well deep enough to hold planting material and plants.

    • 11

Staple the screen or chicken wire to the chair frame with a staple gun. Or attach it with small nails or upholstery tacks.

Fill the well with burlap or sphagnum moss, then add potting soil.
