How to Kill Moss on Patio Furniture

Patios that are shaded during most of the day are likely to grow moss, as this is a favorable condition for its growth. Most moss remedies require upkeep or re-treatment several times a year. The other alternative is to reduce some of the shade in your patio area so that more sun and heat can dissipate the conditions that moss loves so much.

Instructions

    • 1

Move the mossy patio furniture to a sunny location where runoff from your treatments will not wash into plants or grass. It is a prudent idea to heavily water nearby lawns and plants before you start so that the water can provide a barrier for accidental overspray.

    • 2

Dilute household bleach to a ratio of 25 percent bleach and 75 water water in a garden sprayer. Direct the nozzle at the furniture and coat all mossy areas well. Bleach will immediately kill the moss but the results will not last for very long. Allow the bleach to sit on the furniture for 20 minutes. Rinse your furniture with water, aiming away from plantings.

Moisten zinc powder or paste. Scrub the furniture using a nylon bristle brush, a scrubber and a sponge. The zinc will kill more of the moss and reduce the speed it takes to return. Rinse off the zinc paste with water, away from plantings.

Spread zinc powder or laundry detergent powder over the patio in the area where moss is growing. Allow the lightly moistened powder to sit on the patio for several hours or even overnight. This will allow the active ingredients in the powder to kill the moss on the stones, concrete, bricks or other surface. Rinse away from plants when possible.
