How to Replace a Spa Blower

The spa blower provides the circulation and bubbles for a spa, otherwise known as a hot tub. The blower includes two components: the motor and pump. When the blower assembly dies or malfunctions due to age, sometimes replacing it is the best course of action. The process involves preparing the spa and removing the old equipment. With a little elbow grease, a new blower can get your spa working again like new.

Things You'll Need

  • Hose
  • Power drill
  • Hand towel
  • Pipe wrench
  • Screwdrivers
  • New motor and pump for your spa model
  • Flow pipe o-ring gaskets
  • Flow pipe twist clamps

Instructions

    • 1

Purchase a new spa engine and pump that matches your spa model from a parts dealer. Purchase new inflow and outflow pipe clamps and o-ring gaskets.

    • 2

Lift the lid of the safety shutoff for the spa and pull out the emergency bridge unit, which allows the electricity to flow. Check the display on the spa to confirm the power is off.

    • 3

Find the drain plug for the spa and open it up to drain the tub completely. Connect a hose to the plug to direct the water away from the immediate area if needed.

    • 4

Use a handheld, wireless power drill to unscrew the screws that secure the spa side panel. Remove the screws when loose and pull off the side panel that exposes the pump engine. Use a screwdriver to disconnect the electrical power wires to the pump junction.

    • 5

Place a towel on the securing clamp of the big inflow pipe going into the pump engine to be replaced (you may have more than one installed). Position a pipe wrench on the clamp, tighten the teeth, and loosen the clamp. Once spinning, remove the clamp completely until it can be moved off the pipe. Do the same for the outflow pipe clamp.

    • 6

Slide the loose clamps so they no longer connect the pipes to the engine. Use a power drill to disconnect the engine from its baseboard anchors. Pull the old engine out.

    • 7

Place the new engine onto the spa internal baseboard after removing all packaging and safety straps for shipping. Install the two new pipe clamps on either end with a new gasket if needed. Use the power drill to anchor the engine to the base board with the old anchor screws.

    • 8

Use the pipe wrench and towel to tighten the new clamps to seal the joint between the inflow pipe, the engine, and the outflow pipe. Do not over-tighten the clamps (they're plastic and will crack). Check that the drain plug is sealed again.

Refill the spa with water. Reconnect the electrical wiring to the new engine junction. Reinstall the emergency cutoff bridge to restore power. Test the spa flow to confirm it works properly.
