How to Make Bird Feeders Out of Recycled Products

Some items that people throw out can still serve some function. For example, you can turn used drink containers into bird feeders. This allows you to recycle while also making a cheap bird feeder. Make a bird feeder using an old bottle to contain the seeds and wooden spoons for perching. This bird feeder may not last as long as bird feeders from pet stores, but you can always make more using items you will otherwise throw out anyway.

Instructions

    • 1

Measure 4 inches from the bottom of a clean, plastic, 1-liter bottle and use a marker to draw a 1/2-inch circle there. Draw another circle about 1 inch in diameter opposite the first one.

    • 2

Rotate the bottle 90 degrees so the first two circles are on the left and right sides of the bottle. Measure 2 inches from the bottom of the bottle and draw a 1/2-inch circle, then draw a 1-inch circle opposite it.

    • 3

Draw four 1/8-inch circles at the lowest points on the bottom of the bottle. These will serve as drainage holes to prevent rainwater from building up inside.

    • 4

Cut out all the circles you marked using a craft knife. Making slits in the circles before completely cutting them out can make this easier.

    • 5

Insert the handle of your wooden spoon through one 1-inch hole and then through the 1/2-inch hole opposite it. Do the same with the other wooden spoon and the other two holes.

    • 6

Remove the bottle cap. Poke a small eye screw through the center of the cap and twist it in so it stays in place.

    • 7

Thread a 15-inch length of twine through the eye on the bottle cap, gather the two ends of the twine together to form a loop and make a knot. You will use this twine as a hanger.

    • 8

Fill the feeder with bird seed to a level slightly higher than the top wooden spoon and hang it from a tree branch.
