How to Sand Patio Furniture

Wooden patio furniture is more attractive and more comfortable than the cheaper resin furniture available at many home improvement and department stores. However, it does require more maintenance. After a few seasons, your paint and stain will start to peel. Unless you repaint or refinish, the wood will be damaged within months or even weeks. The first step in refinishing that protective coat is to sand the furniture.

Things You'll Need

  • Paint scraper
  • Rough-grit sandpaper
  • Fine-grit sandpaper
  • Piece of scrap wood, approximately the size of your hand

Instructions

    • 1

Scrape away any flaking paint or stain using the paint scraper. You can skip this step if you're sanding new furniture in preparation for a first application of paint or stain.

    • 2

Wrap a sheet of rough-grit sandpaper around your piece of scrap wood. Rub the sandpaper on flat sections of your furniture using long, smooth strokes along the grain of the wood.

    • 3

Test the section your are sanding with your thumb after two or three strokes. You'll know you're finished when the wood feels smooth.

    • 4

Wrap the paper alone around round pieces of your furniture. Twist the paper in a spiral, using long strokes up the shaft of the round segment. Test these areas as you did the flat sections.

    • 5

Repeat steps two through four using fine-grit sandpaper, aiming for a smoother finish.
