How to Make an Outdoor Cigarette Urn From PVC Pipe

Outdoor cigarette urns provide a place for smokers to deposit their cigarette butts instead of throwing the cigarette on the ground. Businesses and homeowners as well use these outdoor receptacles to keep the hazard and eyesore of cigarette butts from littering the outside of their premises. While cigarette urns can be constructed out of expensive and elaborate material, a simple outdoor urn can made using something as simple as a section of 6-inch PVC pipe.

Instructions

    • 1

Cover small piece of plywood with plastic. The plywood will serve as a form for pouring concrete in the bottom of 6-inch PVC pipe. The plastic will keep the mortar from sticking to the plywood.

    • 2

Place the section of 6-inch PVC pipe on top of the plastic covered plywood.

    • 3

Pour the mortar mix into the section of PVC pipe and add the ratio of water specified by the mortar manufacturer. Pour the mortar to a level of six to 12 inches from the bottom of pipe, stirring the mortar with a yardstick.

    • 4

Place the sheet copper over the top of the PVC pipe and force copper down into inside of the pipe to a depth of approximately four inches. Mold the copper with hands to form a bowl inside the pipe.

    • 5

Remove the bowl from the pipe and trim the excess copper away with tin snips, leaving an excess of approximately 1/2 inch. The excess will be used to form a lip over the edge of the PVC pipe.

    • 6

Place the bowl into the PVC pipe and use pliers to bend the excess half inch of copper into a lip to fit over the edge of the PVC pipe. Hammer the copper lip to fit snug to the outside of PVC pipe.

    • 7

Drill four holes through the copper and the PVC pipe; drill the holes across from each other.

    • 8

Place screws into the holes drilled through the copper and PVC pipe. The screws will be used to secure the copper bowl to the PVC pipe.

    • 9

Fill the copper bowl on top of the PVC pipe with sand. Fill the sand to within an inch of the top of bowl to provide space for cigarettes.
