How to Paint a Gazebo

A gazebo adds a shady place to enjoy your garden or lawn and can last for years if it is properly cared for. When you build or install a gazebo, you have several options for how to finish it. You can leave the wood bare, letting it age and turn gray with time. Or you can stain it, changing the color of the wood but leaving the grain visible. If you want a different color than a stain offers, you can paint the gazebo any color that you choose.

Instructions

    • 1

Sweep all surfaces of the gazebo thoroughly to remove any dust, dirt or debris. If needed, spray down the gazebo surfaces to clean any stubborn dirt or debris. Allow it to dry before proceeding.

    • 2

Sand any rough areas of the gazebo to create a smooth surface. Sweep away any dust particles before proceeding.

    • 3

Apply two coats of primer to the gazebo using the paint rollers and brushes. If the grain still shows through, continue to apply primer until the grain is no longer visible. Allow the primer to dry fully.

    • 4

Paint all of the gazebo with the exterior latex paint except for the floor of the gazebo, which you should paint with the exterior floor paint. Apply at least two coats of paint to all areas of the gazebo.
