How to Repair an Outdoor Umbrella

An outdoor umbrella offers excellent protection not only from the heat of the sun but also from the damage that overexposure can cause to your skin. It is particularly important that children have a shady spot. If your patio umbrella becomes damaged, the good news is that it is easy to repair, which allows you to avoid the expense of buying a new one.

Instructions

Lower the umbrella so that the fabric is loose and trim away any loose threads from the tear. Thread the needle and sew the tear together using small, tight stitches. When the tear is sewn up secure the end with a knot before cutting the thread.

Trim loose threads from the edges of the tear to produce a clean edge. Lay the umbrella on a flat surface and apply fabric glue to both sides of the tear and push together. Hold the join for a minute or so while a bond starts to form. Then lay a piece of wax paper over the glued area on both the inside and the outside of the umbrella and weight it down with the heavy books. Leave the glue to dry for as long as is recommended on the label. When the glue is dry, carefully peel away the wax paper.

Trim any loose threads for the edges of the tear to form a clean edge and cut a length of tape that is longer than the tear. Push the edges of the tear together and apply the tape. If you put it in the wrong place, do not try to remove it but apply another piece instead. Put tape to both the inside and the outside of the tear, pressing the tape down to make sure that there are no gaps or air bubbles.
